I was able to visit the South of Island in Sept/Oct of 2010 - yes, it's an ACTIVE place! The large earthquake hit in May of that year and essentially, the place has not stopped shaking since. Christchurch is not much of a city anymore - every time they try to re-build, another quake flattens it again. Fortunately, my daughter and I, though we traveled and felt many, many shakes, were essentially unaffected. One restaurant we ate at was not so fortunate - turning to rubble not long after we were there, proving fatal. Though I knew the trip would be "dangerous" (in a natural disaster sense), we took it and were fine, yet the devastation that we saw and experienced and learned of even after we left, has left me well aware of our sense of "luck" or "time" or what ever you may call it. I love New Zealand and it's land and people - what an AWESOME place. Just sad that it has been hit with these horrific events. Here are the photos that I can walk away with, from our visit to the South Island.
